Chautauqua owner hints at possible return

The managing owner of Chautauqua has hinted at a possible shock return to racing for the star sprinter.

Rupert Legh suggested on Tuesday that he has plans to get the 'Grey Flash' back on the track with the possibility of heading overseas.

The Hong Kong International Sprint in December and sojourns to Ascot and Dubai are believed to be on the agenda for the winner of $8.8 million in prize money.

"We are tossing up at the moment what we do with him but he is a very healthy, happy horse," Legh said on Radio TAB.

"It's a small one (chance he’ll race again). You've got to go through a certain process with the stewards in Melbourne and Sydney and get their consent that he can go and trial again.

"It's in the back of your mind. This is not about money, not about ego or anything else, it's about saying this horse still has so much to offer the Australian public.

"Everyone would love to see him back out there racing. We sure would and everyone I’ve spoken to would."

Legh added: "Hong Kong, Dubai, Ascot - that's the type of path you take with him.

"I don’t think we’d race him back in Australia.

"He wants to race."

A return to racing for the eight-year-old would centre around stewards giving the barrier rogue the allowance to trial again.

Connections retired six-time Group 1 winner Chautauqua in September after he failed to jump with the field in a number of barrier trials.

Chautauqua's last victory came in the G1 TJ Smith at Randwick in April 2017 where he came from last on the turn to blouse English and Fell Swoop.
