Cumani picks up promising Weir colt

Talented colt Declares War has joined the Matt Cumani stable.

The three-year-old had five starts for three wins and two minor placings in 2018 when trained by Darren Weir, and the colt announced himself as a potential topliner when overcoming adversity to register his past two victories.

Interestingly, Declares War returns to Cumani who initially purchased the son of Declaration Of War for $62,000 at the 2017 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

"We bought the horse, he was our horse in the first place. We couldn’t help Craig of Domain Thoroughbreds sell him, so Darren took 25 per cent of the horse and obviously he was transferred to him," Cumani told SEN.com.au.

"In a strange string of circumstances, we've got him back now which is great."

Watch Declares War's remarkable win at Flemington on December 15, 2018:

Cumani is eyeing up some autumn riches with Declares War.

"His last prep was fantastic, he was improving all the time; we're hopeful we can continue his impressive form to date," Cumani said.

"From where he was in running in some of those races, it was almost inconceivable that he would win, but he still managed to do it.

"We're following Darren's plan, which is to give him a jumpout tomorrow, then take to him to the (G2) Autumn Stakes (1400m) this weekend."

Cumani confirmed the G1 Australian Guineas (1600m) at Flemington on March 2 is on his radar, so too is G1 Rosehill Guineas (2000m) on March 23.
