The Melbourne Review April 243 weeks ago
Both Caulfield and Flemington played as expected - the former raced a little softer than a G4 then showers quickly sent it into a S5. Flemington raced like Flemington, basically straightforward with results tempo dependant.
THE BEST WIN
STILL A STAR Race 8 Caulfield
Just a good tough win from a good tough filly that probably levels out at Listed/Group 3 class on the mainland. Still A Star has been up for a little while now, don't forget that she was trained to peak for the All Star Mile, and don't underestimate her toughness here against a couple of horses very much suited to Listed level that still have more to come this prep.
REAL SENSATION Race 5 Flemington
I thought this horse was the only danger to top weight Immortal Love if that horse needed the run - it did - and hopefully some of you saved on the bet. He's got a really strong last 400m this horse and a good will to win, he kept chasing right through the line and will get further than this.
HORSES TO FOLLOW
1. SPINNING (Caulfield R1)
This filly has a bright future and should get over more ground being by Pierro. For a fleeting moment she looked a genuine danger to the favourite but inexperience got her late - stick with her, nice filly and she should get a mile in time.
2. YATTON (Caulfield R2)
They just went far too slowly for Yatton and she was a mile off them with no hope by the 800m. I thought she stayed on well and she's really looking for ground now. A step to 2000m and then a step up to an Oaks trip should see her in really competitive form - I'm tipping they will head north with her.
3. ZACHAZ (Caulfield R3)
Just wait for this bloke to get some weight relief, he's come back really well and a combination of top weight and fitness brought him unstuck here. I'd be happy to back him with confidence in the right race second-up.
4. ZAYYDANI (Fleminton Race 2)
This mare is ready to win something out to 2000m and I loved the way that she hit the line here. A big track is important for her winning profile as is a genuine tempo and a middle distance, but placed well over the next fortnight she can find a winninc scenario.
5. EL ROCKO / GRAPPA DI MOSCATO
Both of these horses were beaten but far from embarrassed in this Listed contest. El Rocko was exposed and wide without cover for the majority of the race but kept staying on, it was a really brave effort and he will be a better horse come spring. So will Grappa Di Moscato which got back to last from a wide gate and ran on strongly without threatening - she's bred to be an Oaks filly and she might get the chance to show that pedigree later this year.
THE MARKET SAID...
That YONKERS (1st R9 $4.20 - $3.70) was going to get a positive ride in a race with limited forward pressure and that is exactly what played out. As soon as Thornton made his intent known and lobbed in the first third of the field on settling, you knew the market was onto something. The horse was best placed to pounce in a race where the leader went far too slowly and rewarded those with the best turn of foot in the first half of the field.
