The Sydney Review Feb 13

Rain again earlier than predicted and it really hammered down prior to race 1. The track actually played quite fair, though naturally the inside section was avoided, but most got their chance. On a day where the track deteriorated, quoting and comparing times/sections is difficult across the day. That said, some splits can still be used to ascertain performance and future performance.

Loved the way STAY INSIDE dropped his head and relaxed like a professional in the run, which is half the battle with 2yos. His 10.96 4-200m split was electric, and he’s still run the F L200m OTR eased down. Clearly McDonald was taken with the performance. I’d have him behind PROFITEER and ENTHAAR for The Slipper, but without doubt he’s in the mix. The way he relaxed, he strikes me as a real Sires Produce type over 1400m.

TAILLEUR did a little bit of early work and maintained a solid gallop. Still think she’s a Group class Mare, and love the versatility, but thinking off pace with cover is now her best set up. TRICKY GIRL has super fresh form, but she came a long way last prep and she’s put the writing on the wall to take the next step this Autumn. Raced back/wide/no cover and ran the F L600m OTR. ICEBATH a definite pass first up. Thinking she may aim up at 2000m into her prep.

CISCO BAY has been up a while, but he’s flying. Maybe 18-2000m is on the cards? Hard fit and finishing off his races powerfully over 1600m. Good win PANDANO down in the weights, can go again in the right race.

MASKED CRUSADER put a forgetful and interrupted Spring campaign behind him and announced himself as ripe and ready to live up to the hype. First up, 1200m, wet track and he has let down like a serious race horse. Winner aside, the run of the race was without doubt GEM SONG. An absolute flashing light if you’ve ever seen it. Noted as ‘needing the run’ off a 62 week spell, he has let rip late and through the line and his L6/4/200m were only shaded by the winner. Prior to this spell, his form card reads around horses the likes of ARCADIA QUEEN, MISTER SEA WOLF, KOLDING, TE AKAU SHARK. A good horse on his day and looks like he’s not done with yet.

Very impressive return from COLETTE and any time there is some give in the ground, she commands respect; that’s now 5/5 in the wet! She had the gun run, but finished off with style. That said, if she clashed with wonder Mare VERRY ELLEEGANT again, I know I’d be with the latter. Paraded with improvement to come, missed the start, but ran on hard. Lovely return. KOLDING good, wants dry and 1600m now. Nice return from MUGATOO from too far back.

This race just cements the status of the 3yo Fillies in Sydney and that is they are anyone’s guess. EVERY ROSE is a speed demon who you thought may have been tested with a wet 1200m first up, but she just kept running. NEVER TALK came through weaker races, but seriously let rip her L400m. AWAY GAME good and tried hard, but every chance, fit and should have won that if she was the cream. HUNGRY HEART okay, but jury out. Likely needs dry. Race throws up more questions than answers.

ACADEMY raced keen and that gap between runs likely brought him unstuck. Same grade 1400m next start follow. THY KINGDOM COME back from 1400m to 1300m, wants 1400m again and some weight relief. CLIFF’S ART good Aus debut.
