WATCH | Huge win by Sydney two-year-old2 years ago
Jockey Andrew Adkins is adamant two-year-old Sun Patch – a brilliant winner at Warwick Farm on Wednesday – has what it takes to be competitive in the world's richest race for two-year-olds, the $3.5 million Golden Slipper.
Talking to SEN.com.au post-race, Adkins was effusive in his praise of the Ron Quinton-trained colt.
"I think he would most definitely hold his ground in the Slipper, it was only his first race start," Adkins said.
"It was a pretty strong field and I think he'll take a lot out of that win.
"Obviously he's a horse going forward; he showed that in his trial and he's shown that in his work as well.
"He's a very smart horse; everything we've asked him to do he's done it professionally."
Exceptional start to Sun Patch's (Exceed & Excel x Girl Hussler) career taking out the 1st at @atc_races for @RonQuinton & team. @SegenhoeGroup bred, raised & sold graduate, through @inglis_sales #Easter to @Georgejmoore8. An $800,000 purchase at last year's Inglis Easter Yearling Sale, the son of Exceed And Excel settled on the fence in the back half of the field, and soon after straightening, a debut victory seemed out of the question.
But the colt exploded with 200 metres to run, bursting through along the rail to score a spectacular win in 56.84 seconds.
"He felt like a genuine nice horse," said Adkins.
"I was quite surprised that a two-year-old could do that, considering where he was in the run.
"The way he let down, it was a real bang, it wasn't like he was slowly building, he showed a good turn of foot for a furlong (200 metres)."
Sun Patch isn't nominated for the Golden Slipper, but connections can pay a late entry fee to get the colt into the race.
He is a $26 chance in Sportsbet's All In Slipper market.
